The site now occupied by the Casa de las Hermanitas was originally the location of the Pueyo family’s ancestral home. This was later used as the headquarters of the so called “Friendship Casino,” one of two in 19thcentury Barbastro. That building was eventually replaced by the first Casa de Hermanitas, an order founded in 1873 by Santa Teresa de Jornet with the help of the canon and historian of the city, Saturnino López Novoa. The aim of this religious order was to help elderly people with no family or means.
