Peraltilla is located at the heart of Somontano on a small hill that rises to 429 metres above sea level. Close to the N-240 road and nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Guara mountain range, it is an excellent departure point for excursions and the perfect place for a holiday.

Historically, Peraltilla has grown and prospered adapting itself to the challenges of each era. It currently boasts facilities and services that guarantee a high quality of life for both residents and visitors; a swimming pool, sports pitch, park, picnic area, hostel and cultural centre.

The Cinca canal passes close to the village; it is a monumental construction of over 91km in length that takes water from the El Grado dam in the north to the plains of Los Monegros in the south.

The old village is compact and traditional yet modern in appearance. It is laid out around the main street, Calle Mayor, where the majority of the smaller side streets arrive. There are a number of houses that represent the constructive norms of centuries gone by, with skirting made of sandstone ashlars, beautifully arched doorways, brick galleries, wooden eaves and coats of arms. Casa Ciria is an excellent example.

A scattering of good quality stone ashlars that once made up sections of a perimeter wall are all that remains of an ancient castle. The towers and the primitive defensive enclosure were enhanced with accommodation in the 16th century affording it a noble aspect. When the castle fell into disuse the stones were gradually removed to be used in other constructions in the area.

The village’s most important fiestas are celebrated in honour of San Joaquin during the week after the Virgen de Agosta (15th August) and have become a benchmark for quality within the region due to the events that take place as well as the mass participation.

The third week in January sees bonfires lit in the streets in honour of the saints, San Fabian and San Sebastian. A procession through the streets is followed by mass and then the town council share out “charity” in the form of a cake flavoured with aniseed that has previously been blessed.

The village’s pilgrimage to the El Pueyo Monastery takes place on the Saturday closest to the feast of San Isidro. It has been celebrated since 1645 and is one of the village’s most popular and poignant traditions.

All over the world there are a wide number of beliefs, myths and traditions related to the ancestral worship of trees, many of which are still respected today. The Fiesta de Mayo commemorates the arrival of summer and is the most widespread folkloric manifestation of this kind in Europe. In Peraltilla, the placing of the “Mayo tree” the night before Easter is a deep rooted tradition; young people meet up at night, look for the highest and straightest poplar tree in the grove and once they have chopped it down, it is placed in the church square.
