The region of Somontano is situated at the heart of the province of Huesca, between the outer peaks of the Pyrenees and the vast plains that border the neighbouring region of Monegros. The word “Somontano” means “at the foot of the mountains” and makes reference to the fact that most of the region sits in the Pyrenean foothills. It enjoys a strategic location on a route that joins Aragon, Cataluña, Navarra and the Basque Country and is located 100km from the city of Zaragoza, 230km from Barcelona and 300km from Pamplona.
The region of Somontano de Barbastro covers an area of 1.163 Km2, and is made of up 29 municipal areas and home to 24.111 inhabitants.
Barbastro, the capital, is home to two thirds of the region’s population (17,210 inhabitants) as well as the industry, equipment and infrastructure associated with a capital city. It has diverse trades and businesses and offers a wide range of services with emphasis on professional, educational, cultural and health services.
