Las Almunias de Rodellar offers an outdoor astronomical Observatory from which you may gaze out to the universe, the comets, the planets, and the stars.

The facility is fitted with:

La escala de cielo oscuro de Bortle fue desarrollada por John Bortle "sobre la base de casi 50 años de experiencia en observación" para describir la cantidad de contaminación lumínica en un cielo nocturno.

La realidad detrás del uso de la escala es la enorme cantidad de luz artificial empujada hacia el cielo por la habitación humana, como se documenta en este globo de contaminación lumínica. Casi todos los puntos de Europa están excesivamente bañados en fotones producidos por infraestructuras que consumen carbono.

Para facilitar el aprendizaje y el uso de la escala, he adaptado los indicadores de brillo del cielo de Bortle como una tabla (abajo), incluidos los códigos de color utilizados en los mapas de contaminación lumínica disponibles.

The Monument to the 20th Century is the work of Ulrich Rückriem. It’s a contemporary art project located in an open field at the foot of the Sierra de Guara, consisting of 20 stone monoliths inserted into the ground, forming a geometric composition.

Immerse yourself in the darkness, approach the monument, let your eyes acclimate, and enjoy the Milky Way stretching from the monument to us.

You can also observe the “teapot” of the Sagittarius constellation, which spreads the Milky Way over our zenith and marks the mountains of the Sierra de Guara.

Named after the designer of the Barbastro Cathedral tower, it’s located 6 km from the capital of Somontano and 300 meters from the entrance roundabout to the village of Cregenzán on the road to Hoz de Barbastro. It has ample parking and several platforms for setting up telescopes and another hexagonal platform for sitting and stargazing. This nods to the shape of the Barbastro Cathedral tower designed by Francisco de Ruesta.

From Cregenzán, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Somontano, where the Mediterranean trilogy predominates, with fields of olive trees and cereals.

Here, you can observe the paths of planets, the moon, and zodiac constellations along the imaginary line known as the ecliptic.

You can also witness meteor showers, which occur when tiny dust particles from a comet enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and disintegrate by friction, producing the luminous trail we call a meteor or shooting star.

If we extend the traces of meteors from the same shower, they all seem to come from one area, the radiant point. All particles enter the atmosphere parallel to each other, but their distance makes them appear to come from a single point.

The constellation where the radiant resides gives the meteor shower its name (Perseids, Geminids, Orionids, etc.). The most famous meteor shower is the Perseids or Tears of Saint Lawrence.
