The oldest inhabitants of Somontano are trees, true natural monuments, many of which have been here for over a thousand years. Hollows in the trunks of these mighty trees are essential for the survival of many animals and plants and a safe refuge for wildlife.

Enjoy Somontano by visiting these guards of nature; get close, smell, feel, look and experience a magical world full of life.

Platanus hispanica

This majestic plane tree, located close to others of its kind, was planted in 1905 at a time when it was very common to plant plan trees by the side of the road. It reaches a height of 33 metres, its base has a circumference of 6.9 metres and it makes up part of the Route of the Monumental Trees within the municipal boundaries of El Grado. The tree is in good condition and belongs to the Government of Aragón.

Location: In Barbastro, take the A-138 road towards France via Bielsa. The tree can be seen 1km before arriving in the village of El Grado on the left hand side of the carriageway.

Carrasca, Quercus ilex L. subsp. ballota.
This holm oak reaches a height of 9 metres. At the base of the trunk its diameter is 1.37 metres and the circumference 4.4 metres. It divides into 5 main branches. Until around 20 years ago, people hunting thrushes with catapults would use it as den. They were responsible for placing a large stone at the base of the split in the tree trunk to force the main branches to point to the floor and so achieve a better hiding place. The tree is in excellent condition and grows on private land.

Location: This tree is reached by taking the A-2205 road, which runs from Adahuesca to Colungo. 3 kms before arriving in Colungo, there is a small unsigned path to the left. Follow this path and after crossing a small almond grove and walking for a further 250 metres, the tree stands in a spot know as Barranco Fornocal.
