Description
The Sanctuary of Torreciudad, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is on the left side of the Cinca river next to the El Grado reservoir.
Its construction was initiated by San Josemaria Escrivá de Balaguer, founder of the Opus Dei, and was opened for worship in 1975.
The collection of buildings, work of architect Heliodoro Dols, highlights the variety of forms that a basic construction element, the brick, can create. It is a work of art that represents, in a creative form, the traditional construction elements in Aragon.
In its interior, the altarpiece is particularly noteworthy, sculpted in alabaster by Joan Mayné, which depicts different scenes of the Virgin Mary. In the centre, you will find the Romanesque woodcarvings. Also notable is the organ, which has more than four thousand tubes.
It forms part of the Marian Route that links Saragossa (Basilica of Pilar), Torreciudad, Montserrat (Barcelona), Lourdes (France) y Meritxell (Andorra).
